Whale & Pine

Whale & Pine is an 18"x24" canvas print, featuring a whale skull in a grunge and textured fashion.

Whale and Pine was an online art gallery and art collection curated by Camilo Bajanaro of Ph7labs. Sadly, it is no longer. Anyway.

Last year, Whale and Pine organized a poster contest to bring more artists in. The contest theme was pretty loose.

This poster was our second submission. Our goal was to embody the Whale and Pine brand as much as possible, while still putting our stamp on it.

The version sold here on 13 Spade is really close to the one we submitted to the contest.

We followed a process combining old photographs taken from the Flickr and Wikipedia Commons collections (free of rights and public domain images), hand drawn illustration (the whale skull) and a lot of “texture magic“. After hours and hours of lovingly and patiently layering textures after textures, here’s the result.
